When classes begin in August, there will be thousands of new faces on campus, but only two of those faces will be of the four-legged variety.

Nero, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, and Toro, a 1-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, will have joined the Virginia Tech Police Department as the university’s newest officers.

"I've never been focused on records or scoring," Murielle Tiernan says. "Honestly, as long as we're winning the game, as long as we're doing well, I don't care who's scoring, I don't care how we're scoring, [and] I don't care if it's pretty. I just care that we win.”

A natural on the field, Tiernan has scored with every body part legal in the game, and opponents have no choice but to double-mark her during goal-threatening opportunities. Despite the defensive efforts, the 5-foot-11 junior from Ashburn, Virginia, is the Hokies' all-time leading goal scorer, with 39 goals in just three years.

Named to the 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American third team and the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) first team, Tiernan, who's majoring in residential environments and design at Virginia Tech, is relentless in the classroom, too. She's been named to the ACC All-Academic Team each year of her college career.

Aside from tangling with the best defenders in the country, Tiernan fights another battle. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 6, she'll tell you she's neither amazing nor commendable; it's just who she is. She's that good.

Virginia Tech researchers are urging changes in how commercial aircraft engines are designed in the wake of a possible new threat to passenger aircraft safety: the likelihood of drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, being sucked into turbofan engines at high speeds.

Such an impact – be it unintentional or part of a malicious act -- would be devastating to the engine as its blades are ripped to shreds after “ingesting” the hard-shell center of a drone’s electronics housing.
